Steiff has an amazing story that if told to children would surely have a fairytale effect. Margarete Steiff contracted polio when she was only 18 months old, this lead to her being wheelchair bound. Such a disability is clearly very difficult to live with in modern times but step back 125 years or more and it was so much harder.

In order to make a living and to work Margarete took up sewing and tailoring at a young age and found that she has a natural aptitude for it. She then started her own small business, initially making clothes for ladies and children. One day Margarete began sewing a pin cushion in the shape of her favourite animal, an elephant. Little did she know how this one step could lead to the creation of a multinational business known worldwide for excellence – Margarete Steiff GmbH.

This little elephant pin cushion, later known as "Elefäntle", captured the heart of children who saw it. This gave Marharete Steiff the idea to produce soft toy animals for children. From then on her motto became “Only the best is good enough for children!”

Margarete Steiff and her soft toy business had become popular and her nephew Richard Steiff decided to further the business in later years. Richard Steiff produced the world’s first teddy bear; it was made from cuddly soft plush and fully jointed with moving arms, legs and head. This pivotal step in the evolution of the teddy bear defined Steiff as a company. Soon the word Steiff became known around the world from America to Japan. The famous “Button in ear” became synonymous with quality, excellence and beauty.

Celebrating the 125th anniversary of such a massive occasion as the birth of the company that invented the teddy bear requires something amazing, so that is what Steiff have done. Steiff have created a unique and valuable anniversary edition of "Elefäntle" and a teddy bear, each adorned with gold and precious jewels and produced in a limited edition of only 125 pieces worldwide.

The precious stones are set in 18 carat (750/000) white gold. Furthermore, the edge of the saddlecloth is adorned with real onyx beads, each measuring 3 mm in diameter. The little elephant's eyes are also made of genuine onyx. Hand-crafted tusks made of mammoth ivory and a 24 carat gold "Button in Ear" completes this little masterpiece.
